The KHPS Team
Kirk has worked in the historic preservation field for over 30 years and in more than a dozen states. He began consulting in order to service communities in a different way than in his previous advocacy and non-profit career.
Mason started at Kirk Huffaker Preservation Strategies in December 2023 after working for most of the year in cultural resources at Hill Air Force Base (Utah). He brings deep passion for historic preservation along with experience in research, writing, working with archives, creating public education activities and public engagement, preparing NRHP nominations and historic tax credit applications, working with the SHPO, Section 106 compliance, and producing maps in ArcGIS. He holds a B.A. in History from Weber State University and an M.A. in History from Utah State University.
Jessica holds a BA in journalism from Brigham Young University and an MA in history from the University of Utah. She is a proud Utah native and especially loves the beauty of historic structures surrounded by Utah’s magnificent scenery. Jessica enjoys all kinds of historical research, with experience in topics from the cultural significance of maize in the Aztec empire to the iconic role of Dinah, the pink dinosaur sculpture of Vernal, UT. She values highlighting the role of diverse populations in Utah’s history. Jessica profiled Utah’s African American businesses for the national Green Book project under the auspices of the University of Virginia. She also worked as a public relations consultant for Utah Dine Bikeyah, a charitable organization of the Navajo tribe, focused on retaining protection for Bears Ears National Monument. Jessica particularly enjoys observing the role of the environment in the places we inhabit within the landscape. She continues her association with the University of Utah as an adjunct instructor in the History Department.
Amy is a graduate student in Utah State University’s Master’s degree program in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning with an emphasis on historic landscapes. Amy has conducted research and produced documentation on dozens of historically and architecturally significant properties with widely varying character-defining features. Her thesis is an NRHP nomination of the Spiral Jetty in Box Elder County, Utah. Independently, she was the lead researcher and author of the local historic district nomination for the Lower Harvard Historic District in Salt Lake City, and is also active in documenting historic architecture of rural Romania, teen anti-vape advocacy, and the Utah movement for better mental health through nature and art. As a consultant with KHPS she has been engaged in research and writing for the Allen Park Cultural Landscape Report, Kearns (Utah Governor’s Mansion) Cultural Landscape Report, Pocatello Downtown Historic District Design Standards and the NRHP nomination for the Salt Lake City LDS 15th Ward Meetinghouse.
